Resumes in The Age of COVID
During these unusual times in 2020, now is a great time to brush up on your resume and prepare for your next opportunity.
To address the basics, the easier it is to read, the better. The old rule of keep it to one page does not really apply any longer particularly if you have been in the workforce for a long time and have significant experience. Your resume should range from 1-4 pages depending on your years of experience.
Most employers are interested in your most recent experience and therefore, elaborate on the last 10 years and beyond 10, summarizing prior experience.
The resume should be neat with minimal formatting and tables making it easier to follow. Follow the below format example to accomplish this:
Start at the top with your personal contact information followed by
Summary: What do you want them to know most about you?
Technical Skills: Make sure your list includes the technical skills on the job description (assuming you have those skills)
Experience (chronological with most recent position first, then descending)
• Company name, location, dates of employment
• Job Title
• Description of responsibilities- use bullet points for an easy read
Certificates, specialized training
• Use a readable font such as Times New Roman and a reasonable font size such as 11.
• Always check your spelling and grammar.
• Have a friend or family take a quick look – they may find something you missed.
There are free resume templates available on the web which can be helpful in getting started or polishing your resume. Always tailor your resume to the specific type of job you are looking for. example, if you wish to secure a job as a Project Manager, then include specific references in your job responsibilities which showcase your project management skills. In addition, if you have specific skills that the employer has indicated in their job description, be sure to include those skills in your experience. Recruiters are also a great resource for feedback on your resume, ask them for feedback too!
